I've spent two years in prison relaying stories sent by letters to a blogger about my crimes, arrests, and life in four Florida prisons, the Pinellas County Jail, juvenile detention and drug rehab. I'm sending a message to others not to make the same mistakes I did.

FL's youthful offender prisons: The KKK, starvation and abuse?

Ted wrote me that he thought he would be transferred to Lake City or Lancaster. Both happen to be camps for Youthful Offenders and both are in North Florida.

Ted wasn’t sentenced as a Youthful Offender. He was sentenced as an adult.

When I called the CFRC to find out why he was in with YOs, they told me it was because of his age and size – not for any other reason. (Ted is 5'11" and was 119 lbs. about four weeks ago, even though the DOC site says he's 5'8".)

Lancaster supposedly has better food, but Lake City has air-conditioning.

There are old rumors that the guards at Lancaster are part of the KKK and in the past, there have been abuse issues. Some recent comments about Lake City talk about some of the kids being starved for two or three weeks.

I think Ted will be sent to Lake City. It is privately run. So if Ted writes about the conditions there, it won’t make the state-run prison system look bad.

  1. 'My Son was currently at Lancaster C.I.They say that those are rumors about Lancaster being part of he KKK.Some say if you check out the history you will find that some of the Offices wear key chains the have a set of balls on them. These balls are known as called "monkey balls."The Officers with these on are part of the Klan(gang)Lancaster talks about how many problems they have with the gangs , but the Skin Heads are the ones who actually are top on the list for working with the Officers helping them run things on the compound. My son is white but is not into the gang activities, fighting and all the stupid crap that goes on to get caught up and get into stupid S*** Unfortunately if you are not in the click then you need to be eliminated from the area. You become a RISK to the Officers if you know to much and know that the Officers are not doing their jobs the way they should be by the Chapter 33's and the Policy and Procedures of the Florida Department of Corrections. My son was abused by staff at Lancaster along with several other youths. Most of the youth do not have family or an Advocate to speak up for them so they are afraid to speak out on their own in the result of retaliation and being beaten.Due to my son telling me what all that they had done to him and others I contacted the Institution and the Inspector Generals Office.Needless to say my son had been placed into Confinement under Protection due to staff abuse but it continued verbally while he was in Confinement, finally he could not take it anymore and declared a Physiological emergency and three days later he was transferred out to another Institution by the Physic Specialist. She told him that this happens to often and she needed him transferred out. This makes no since, these Youthful Offenders are to be rehabilitated not slapped around and treated like animals, this is only making them worse. All State Correctional Institution whether it be an Adult or Youthful Offender Camp all follow but the State of Florida Department of Corrections Policies and Procedures and Chapter 33's.I guess I should be saying they are supposed to follow these rules. But I see first hand that they DO NOT...... Lancaster has the nick name "Klan-caster"..The Gladiator camp.

  2. With all due respect, the previous comments do not even begin to describe the cruel and unusual punishment that is imposed on the inmates at Lancaster CI. Despite their crimes, or maybe just unfortunate circumstances that led these young men to incarceration, no human being, or animal for that matter, should be subjected to this type of treatment. Once one crosses that chain-link fence, they are an instant target for abuse. With the exception of VERY few, the staff at this correctional facility are absolutely morally corrupt. They use a wide variety of physical abuse and mental torture for their disciplinary tactics. All the while, they watch inmates suffer with a sick sadistic grin. The sight of that often toothless grin is enough to make ones skin crawl. Perhaps the worst part is that the officers come together and share in the discomfort of the inmates with some sort of sick twisted camaraderie. Almost as if it is a brotherhood where they think they are gods and inmates are ants. Make no mistake... they take extreme pleasure in dishing out cruel punishment. The Lancaster staff uses a wide array of techniques to torture inmates. Florida heat, rain, and cold are a popular choice. With the prison being located in a very country area of Central/Northern Florida, racism is quite common. The verbal degradation is abundant with racial slurs and demeaning words. Though, being white does not necessarily exempt anybody from the verbal abuse. A quick slap or backhand is not an uncommon practice. But it gets so much worse. Often times, multiple officers will gang up and literally beat inmates, sometimes using blunt objects such as broomsticks. If the inmate so much as tries to defend themselves they are usually given a generous helping of pepper spray at point blank range. I could go on and on but don't have time to write a book. I haven't even touched on the confinement and chow hall conditions. I'm not intending to scare any parents who read this but merely to educate them. Abuse is common in most prisons but especially in youthful offender prisons. An inmates best bet is to try and go through their sentence without sticking out from the crowd. The ones that stick out are the easiest targets. It is difficult, yet possible, to make it through without being directly abused by the corrupt officers of Lancaster CI.

  3. I was at lancaster. They cuff people up and spray them n the face with mace and spit on them, maybe cause they dont like u, or maybe u wont bare false witness against someone, they beat people, almost every day for little or no reason. I spent two years there, it should be shut down and the guards should be sent prison

  4. My son just got out of lancaster in February at which time he was moved to RMC Main and served the rest of his sentence. He spent 10 months of a two year sentence in confinement, no phone calls and no visits. I just found out when he got home last week that it was because an officer at Lancaster had handcuffed him (behind his back none the less) and beat him on 3 separate occasions until his eyes were swollen shut, he head was split open, lips busted, and barely recognizable. When my son tried to write home the officer intercepted his mail and beat him again and then had him write in a statement that he was lying and just wanted money. After this last interaction my son told the officer he did not care what he did that he (my son) would not keep getting beat he would "check out first"! Officers beating and killing some of the "youthful offenders" is absolutely ridiculous, they even stand by and direct inmates to beat other inmates and shove broom/mop handles in their rectums. They stand by and watch, as well as participate in whats known as "poking" inmates, or stabbing them with sharpened obects, they do this to the boys scrotum and penis as a "toh" or test of heart. Tearing these young man apart and then do not get them medical care and threaten their lives and more severe beatings if they open their mouths.
This kind of behavior out of guards is sickening but you can not tell me for one minute that the entire staff does not know and are not corrupt, how many times do you have to see these young men all beaten, blood gussing from everywhere, and not even offered a bandaide (not that it would help), because they do not care from the top to the bottom of the command.....they don't care! Putting people in confinement for years, not feeding them, it may look like they are giving them a tray on camera and they are, but when the young man takes the top off all that is there is salt and pepper!
It's not just lancaster either, it is everyone of the youthful offender camps they have the same sorry excuses for guards.
My son now has seizures which he has never had in his life, anxiety so bad he don't want to leave the house and is definitely not the person that went to prison. The funny part is he went to prison fo4 a fight that he had got jumped in and was sentenced to 2 years, these guards pull all kinds of things much worse and get probation. I hope one day those same guards, those same police, and those same judges that stood by and did nothing but tell the media it's being taken care and our children are safe run into one of the young man on the street or even a member of their family and I hope that get everything they have coming to them!

  5. I was there for 5 yrs and there was more hate and abuse from the officers there than you can imagine. They used to say it was their job to punish us and we are nothing and always will be nothing as they tortured us in many different ways.
