(Circles are numbered 1 - 10 and there's also a number 15 - the quantity of each item ordered.)Each inmate is supplied with basic cheap stuff such as toothpaste and soap.
The items on this menu are things an inmate can buy with any money they have in their commissary account (supplied by friends and/or family by moneyorder). Inmates can place their orders twice a week.

These prices don't seem particularly outrageous. I'm not saying they're fair, considering the entire prison system buys in bulk for less than most smaller grocery chains. But some of this is ridiculous. A guard could easily grab 20 or 30 ketchups at a McDonald's and sell them in prison for $3.00. May not sound like much, but do this 40 or 50 time/wk, and now we're talking a nice supplement. If the state would allow me to run the commissary, I would make life comfortable for inmates (thus decreasing violence and helping people), make items available for 40% lower than these prices, and would become a millionaire in less than 3 months.

Making jail "comfortable" is only going to produce ex-cons who don't mind going back to their "comfortable" jail for free room and board and cheap commisary items. The above list makes me sick. They shouldn't have candy and treats available to them at all and the prices are cheaper than most grocery stores. I say if they want M&M's and lotion and the state is going to make it available they should have to pay triple!!

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, one of the main things that is important is to keep everyone safe in jail. We don't need a lot of pent up anger going on in there which would result if you denied them everything except 3 crappy, small, unhealthy meals a day and no activities. That would just promote violence from pent up anger and boredom and more medical bills for the tax payers. Come on people. Think long term goals here. Secondly, again, we are talking about people who will mostly be released back to society. Let's not try to harden them too much. One think I worry about this whole commissary thing is the "haves" and the "have nots". Seems it would cause fights from stealing and jealousy. They should be separated accordingly. Lastly, that commissary list sucks. What a bunch of unhealthy crap. How about nuts, dried fruit, granola bars, protein bars, Triscuits, etc. etc. Again, I'm going back to a healthy diet to reduce medical costs to the taxpayers.

ReplyDeleteI just got released from prison and let me tell you that commissary is not good enough to make anyone go back and to the gentleman saying that the state is making it comfortable for inmates... Sir u obviously have no idea what its like so why even speak on it comfortable is the last word that comes to my mind when thinking of prison. Have a good day everyone.

Jail meals is blend not good, Jail meals is about just keeping an inmate alive as required, Add, Your locked up in a small over crowded room or cell without any privacy, When Your showering, All your body parts are exposed to everyone to see even to female guards, When on the toilet, Your exposed, Everyone can watch an see what your doing an yes, it's a inbearising moment. On clothes exchange day, your lined up standing in a long line totally nude waiting exposed to even the watching female guards,The stress lever is high, fights breakout an there's nowhere to duck, I was jailed 3 1/2 years, I had ineffective assistance of counsel, Here In Oroville calif 95965, Pubic defenders are assigned to more case's then they have time for. So no-contest plea bargains are pushed, It's more like being forced into one by the add exeter enhancements charges adding more years but they agree to drop them an reduce your incarceration time or and give time served with probation if you will plea out, If you refuse like in case, The next court appearance's was about to move it to another court date. until I took the officered plea bargain because it looked to be the way back home. In my case, no evident was found that supported my charges an there Surveillance report stated, Me & my trailer was never seen involved in any type of that activity I was charged with, My Public defenders never disclosed or pointed this out to me or to the court, He never fully discuss my case with me, All his visits was short, mainly about taking the no contest plea & stating our next court date. So during my stay in Jail, Should I had been denied commissary accesses ? What little commissary I could afford, I bought with the little bit of money I earned prior to my incarceration, & should I had been as miserable as possible during my incarceration time ? Add when I got released, I had lost most everything of value, My trailer was ram sacked & damage, If I hadn't made my last property and trailer payment that month, I would had lost my home an property by default of non-payment and only had the paper suit the jail gave me to leave in.
